Ski touring Val Maira
Ski touring Val Maira
Ski-touring paradise, the Italian way.
Val Maira Ski Touring: The Trip
Val Maira is a valley in the Piedmont region of Italy, in the province of Cuneo, whose upper end forms the border with the French Ubaye.
A region that has stayed genuinely authentic — some hamlets are home to only a handful of residents in winter.
Here, you ski wherever the eye leads. The bowls are wide and welcoming, the larches well spaced, the slopes gentle — though there is steeper terrain too. A paradise for ski touring, rounded off with typical Italian mountain lodging.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
An accessible warm-up right above Marmora. Several west-facing options around 800 m of ascent to stretch the legs after the drive.
📈 +800 m / 📉 -800 m
Preit is a beautiful little village five minutes from Marmora, with countless itineraries. Mont Bert is a fine objective, climbed via its west flank, with a descent possible on almost any aspect depending on conditions. For those wanting more, you can continue above Lago Nero toward two very enjoyable peaks to ski.
📈 +950 m / 📉 -950 m
Chialvetta is another Val Maira hamlet, well known for its ski-touring options. Once again, the objective is adapted to the snow conditions. Bric Boscasso can offer a descent down to Preit — the starting village of Day 2.
📈 +1100 m / 📉 -1100m
The highest summit above Marmora. A fine objective to close the trip before heading home — a fitting end to this Italian winter interlude.
📈 +1160 m / 📉 -1160 m
The objective, itinerary, distances and altitudes may vary depending on snow conditions, weather, terrain and the group’s level. Each evening, you will decide on the following day’s route with your guide.
La Marmu — an Italian-style guesthouse in Marmora
A traditional Val Maira guesthouse in the hamlet of Marmora. Accommodation is in shared dormitories on a half-board basis, with breakfast and dinner served on site each day.
A friendly atmosphere, local cuisine and Italian hospitality, all in the heart of an unspoilt valley.
This trip is designed for independent ski tourers. You should be comfortable skinning uphill and skiing downhill on ungroomed snow and varied terrain.
A good level of fitness is required, with daily ascents ranging from +800 m to +1,160 m. Knowing how to use an avalanche transceiver is essential — your guide can provide a refresher in the field if needed.

⛷️ What is ski touring? Do I need any experience?
Ski touring involves climbing on skis with skins attached underneath, then skiing back down on ungroomed snow, away from marked ski areas. This trip requires you to already be an independent ski tourer: you should know how to skin uphill and be comfortable skiing off-piste. This is not a beginner course.
🏔️ What level and fitness are required?
Daily ascents range from +800 m to +1,160 m, so you need a good level of fitness and experience both climbing and descending on skis. On the descent, you should be comfortable skiing in all snow conditions.
Not sure about your level? Talk to us before booking: we adapt the objectives to the group.
🛜 Do I need to know how to use an avalanche transceiver?
Yes. An avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are essential, and you need to know how to use them. Your guide will provide a refresher in the field, but basic knowledge is expected.
🎿 What equipment do I need? Can I rent it?
Ski touring skis with bindings and skins, suitable ski boots, an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, plus your usual mountain equipment. All equipment can be rented in Chamonix — just let us know if you need it.
🏠 Where will we stay?
At La Marmu, an Italian guesthouse in the hamlet of Marmora, with accommodation in shared dormitories on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner included). Expect a friendly atmosphere and local cuisine.
🚗 How do we get there?
Transfers from Chamonix are included, as well as local transportation by minibus. Our team provides on-site assistance throughout the trip.
🗓️ Can the itinerary change?
Yes, and that’s completely normal in ski touring. The objective, itinerary, elevation gain and altitudes may be adjusted depending on snow conditions, weather, terrain and the group’s level. Each evening, you’ll decide on the following day’s route with your guide.
👥 How many people are in the group?
The trip runs with a minimum of 4 participants. Contact us if you’re interested in a private group or a different group size.
📑 What insurance do I need?
Repatriation and search and rescue insurance is mandatory. Cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
⚠️ Deposit and cancellation policy?
For bookings made directly with Nuyama: a 35% deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 35 days before departure. Full cancellation terms will be provided at the time of booking.
